What is the difference between a counselor, psychologist and psychiatrist?
First, it is important to know that anyone can call themselves a "counselor." This is why it is essential that any counselor you consider seeing is licensed by the state of Texas . Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) are individuals who promote growth and healing in a structured, supportive environment. They do what is commonly referred to as "talk therapy." Psychiatrists are Medical Doctors (MD) who are experts in the field of psychology and who prescribe medication. Psychiatrists typically do not do counseling. Psychologists are also doctors, but they are Doctors of Philosophy (PhD) rather than medical doctors. Because they are not medical doctors they do not prescribe medication. Psychologists perform a variety of functions including counseling and psychological testing.

What is the difference between counseling and life coaching?
Counselors generally assist individuals who are in crisis or who are experiencing emotional or behavioral problems. Growth and healing are promoted through the development of insight and the resolution of past issues.  Life coaches generally focus on motivation and change in the present and future. They assist individuals in identifying a goal and creating an action plan while monitoring their progress in a structured, supportive environment.

What types of services do you offer?
We offer individual, group, marriage/relationship, family, multi-family, intensive therapy (sessions of increased frequency), marathon therapy (sessions of increased duration), e-mail correspondence, phone consultations, anger-management, parent training and Life Coaching.

How do I know which therapist to choose?
Potential clients are offered a free 20-minute phone consultation with any therapist at Leon Springs Counseling & Life Coaching. We believe you deserve the opportunity to explore your situation with a trained professional, and to determine your comfort level with that professional. Should you choose to forego this offer, when you contact us you will be asked a series of questions which will enable us to match you with the therapist best suited to meet your specific needs.

Do you offer evening or early morning appointments?
Leon Springs Counseling & Life Coaching offers limited evening and early morning and weekend appointments.

How long can I expect to be in therapy?
Because every individual and every situation is unique, this is a question that can be discussed with your therapist during your initial assessment. Your goals, presenting issues and the frequency with which you attend counseling are some of the factors that determine how long you will be in therapy.

How long is a therapy session?
Standard therapy sessions are 45 minutes long. However, sometimes clients prefer to meet with their therapist for longer. In these cases, special accommodations can be made.

How frequently can I expect to meet with my therapist?
Initially you can expect to meet with your therapist weekly. This is essential in establishing a therapeutic rapport with your therapist. However, as counseling progresses clients frequently move to biweekly or even tri-weekly sessions.

What if I want marriage/relationship counseling but my partner refuses to attend?
Schedule an individual session! It only takes one person to initiate change, and exploring ways in which your behavior impacts your relationship can be a positive beginning.
